MJ Carter worked as publisher and journalist before starting work on her first book, Anthony Blunt, His Lives, in 1994. It was published in 2001 and won the Orwell Prize and the Royal Society of Literature, WH Heinemann award, and was named as one of the New York Times seven best books of 2002. Her second, The Three Emperors (US title George, Nicholas and Wilhelm) was shortlisted for the 2010 LA Times Biography of the year and the Hessell Tiltman history prize.
In 2011, having written two non-fiction tomes, she decided to try something different but which allowed her to use her love of historical research, and began to write a series of historical mystery-thrillers set in the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign, featuring the Private Inquiry Agent Jeremiah Blake. The first, The Strangler Vine, was published in January 2014 and was longlisted for the Baileys Prize for Women’s Fiction and shortlisted for the CWA First Blood award for debut thrillers. She lives in London with her husband and two sons.
