Ruth pored over the sleeping Bridie like a reader over some very absorbing book, a book which she must finish and commit to memory now if ever, for it was a vanishing text whose meanings must pass away.
For five contented years, Bridie has been Ruth’s steadfast companion in an increasingly harsh world. Now, without warning, all has changed, and both the further and history of their lives together are suddenly, shockingly called into question.
