Barbara Euphan Todd was born in Yorkshire and began to write when she was only eight years old. It was, of course, some years later that Worzel Gummidge made his first appearance in 1936. He quickly became a firm favourite and reached an even wider audience when his adventures were broadcast in his own television series.
