    Claire Barker

Claire Barker lives on a wild and windy fringe of Devon, England.
An indoors/outdoors sort of person, she likes trees, animals, children and wrangling words into submission.
Oh yes. And she laughs a lot.
Her stories about Knitbone Pepper, the lovable ghost dog (published by Usborne, illustrated by Ross Collins) have been translated into ten different languages.
In 2017 they were shortlisted for the Sainsbury’s Children’s Fiction award and won the Book Factor, an independent bookshop award voted for exclusively by children. In the same year she was nominated by Devon Librarians for the prestigious Ruth Rendell Award, for the author who has done the most to champion literacy.
The first book in her new series Picklewitch and Jack (Faber and Faber, illustrated by Teemu Juhani) was published in September 2018, with the second Cuckoo Cousin due out in September 2019.
Claire is a qualified Higher Level teaching assistant and has years of experience of working in a primary education environment. She also has a degree in English Literature and History and an HNC in Illustration (all of which have turned out to be very useful, if only she’d known it at the time.)
