Donald Thomas is the author of seven biographies, including Cardigan of Balaclava and his bestselling life of a controversial naval hero, model for Captain Hornblower and Jack Aubrey, in Cochrane: Britannia’s Sea-Wolf. He won the Gregory Award for his poems Points of Contact. His novels include The Raising of Lizzie Meek, based on the scandals surrounding the Victorian miracle-worker Father Ignatius of Capel-y-ffin. Two collections of his Sherlock Holmes stories have been published as The Secret Cases of Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes and the Running Noose. Donald Thomas was born in Somerset and educated at Queen’s College, Taunton, and Balliol College, Oxford. He holds a personal chair in the University of Wales, Cardiff, now Cardiff University.
