Born in 1930 to a Jewish family in Vilna, Poland, Esther Hautzig was sent into exile in Siberia with the rest of her family in 1940. When she was released in 1946, she first returned to Poland, then lived in Sweden for a time before going to live in the USA. In 1950 she married the concert pianist Walter Hautzig. In 1968 The Endless Steppe, the story of her family's exile to Siberia, was published.
