Elizabeth and Betsy knew each other as schoolchildren. When they meet again in later life one is safely married, the other most unsafely partnered. They discover that what they have in common is the same capacity for making dangerous choices. Their willingness to implement these choices reveals the fate that was spelt out in their very different characters from the start.
