When a prostitute is discovered murdered in her room in London’s West End, DCI Brock wishes he’d get a nice genteel crime to clear up – and his sidekick, Poole, wonders why he always has to do so much chasing around. As the context of the crime becomes clearer, things just get seedier, a whole web of people are implicated, and none of them do anything to improve Brock’s view of humankind.
