Adharanand went to Kenya with his family for six months at the beginning of 2011 to discover the soul of Kenyan long distance running. A keen runner himself, he trained with the athletes, many of whom ran in the London Olympics, and eventually competed in his first ever marathon in Kenya against top competition. His goal: not to finish last.
Running With The Kenyans, his account of his time spent in Kenya, is published by Faber and Faber in the UK and Ballantine in the USA. It was shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year award.
His second book, The Way of the Runner, a journey into the fabled world of Japanese running, was published by Faber & Faber in spring 2015 and in the US by Pegasus in 2016. His latest book, The Rise of the Ultra Runners, was published by Guardian Faber in 2019.
