Andy Cave was born into a mining family in the North of England and is now an Alpinist with several formidable first ascents to his credit, and a qualified International Mountain Guide. He has a PhD. in socio-linguistics from the University of Sheffield.
His first book, Learning to Breathe (Hutchinson, 2005), won the 2005 Boardman Tasker Award and the Banff Award for Adventure Travel Writing. This is an extraordinary autobiography of a brilliant young climber who began life as one of the last generation of British Miners. His second book Thin White Line, was published by Random House in 2008.
