Simon Crump

Simon Crump was born in Loughborough, and lived in Sheffield for forty years. His first three books were published by Bloomsbury Press My Elvis Blackout, a composite novel, Monkey’s Birthday a short story collection and Twilight Time, a ‘conventional’ novel. My Elvis Blackout has been optioned for a TV series in America. They Call it U-Boat Hotel, a work of historical non-fiction, was published in 2002 by Grizedale Books as a result of a residency.

Neverland, his second composite novel was published by Old Street Publishing in 2009.

More recently, Galley Beggar Press has reissued two novels My Elvis Blackout and Neverland as Galley Beggar Classics.

In 2017, he became involved in the Sheffield street tree campaign and was arrested twice and received a suspended prison sentence for environmental activism. Persons Unknown: the Battle for Sheffield’s Street Trees, a collection of eye-witness accounts, day by day, street by street which he coauthored with Calvin Payne was published by Wrecking Ball Press in 2022

His career as a professional writer has also included readings at literary events such as the Edinburgh Book Festival. He was also invited by the British Council to The European Festival of the Short Story in Croatia, where he represented the UK.

His books have made an impact in his chosen creative field as a writer of experimental fiction and his two composite novels have been described (at least by Galley Beggar Press) as ‘classics’ of the genre.

Simon's latest book, Post It Notes from Underground, will be published by Bluemoose Books in 2026.
