Timo Schaefer is an award-winning historian of Latin America. His first academic book, Liberalism as Utopia: The Rise and Fall of Legal Rule in Post-Colonial Mexico, 1820-1900, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2017. It was awarded the Mexican best-book prize (social sciences) from the Latin American Studies Association. Timo has taught at leading universities including the University of Oxford, and is currently Lecturer in Latin American History at the University of Edinburgh. He divides his time between Scotland and Canada, where he lives with his wife and three dogs. His first trade book The Labyrinth will be published by Basic Books in the US and Simon & Schuster in the UK in 2026.
