The Spice Islands Voyage is about a journey and a quest: a journey among the Spice Islands of equatorial Indonesia aboard a traditional native sailing vessel; a quest to rediscover Alfred Russel Wallace, who jointly proposed, with Charles Darwin, the theory of natural selection. Navigating through sparkling coral seas to remote shorelines, Tim Severin and his crew retraced the explorer's journeys, observing the smuggling of rare birds and rainforest destruction, but also witnessing the emergence of a new sense of environmental awareness.
