Cat was born in Zambia and brought up in Edinburgh and Yorkshire, which has given her an accent that tends to confuse people.
She has written non-fiction books for children and novels for teenagers and currently writes with V.E. Schwab under the pseudonym Evelyn Clarke. Their first book, The Ending Writes Itself, will be published by HarperCollins in 2026.
