On the face of it, the double homicide of Arnold and Marie Robbins looks like just another brutal Miami Beach murder - except that Cathy Robbins, Marie's teenage daughter, is lying between the bodies, blood-drenched, traumatised but otherwise unharmed. Is the teenager a silent witness or maybe the killer herself? As more victims are murdered, each with an intimate link to the teenager, Detective Sam Becket no longer has any alternative but to arrest her. Only child psychologist Grace Lucca believes Cathy incapable of the crimes, but Becket fears that in putting her faith in Cathy's innocence, Lucca could be risking her life...
